They left America and sailed to France. Painters and sculptors, inventors, political thinkers, doctors and nurses – Paris gave them a vision of deeper knowledge and more intense beauty. We follow in the footsteps of Samuel Morse, an accomplished painter before he invented the telegraph and Morse code; Charles Sumner, whose studies at the Sorbonne helped make him a passionate abolitionist; and Elizabeth Blackwell, America’s first female physician, when there were twice the number of medical students in École de Médecine de Paris as in all of America. McCullough gives us the sweep of history, from the Franco-Prussian war to the Commune and the Second Empire.
